The Altra Lone Peak 7 is the newest iteration of a design that totally revolutionized what trail running shoes can be. The first Lone Peak models introduced what’s known as an “open toe box” (extra room in the toe section which allows the foot to move if necessary). The open toe box, combined with Altra’s signature Zero Drop layout, created a natural foot strike that is supported by excellent cushion, protection, and grip. Subsequent Lone Peak models benefitted from materials advancements and continued to improve, and the Lone Peak 7 is undoubtedly the best yet. If you’re looking for a trail running shoe for long days on uneven terrain, then the Lone Peak 7 is a great option.

WHY PACERS CARRIES THESE SHOES:

The Altra Lone Peak 7 is a staple trail running shoe for good reason. The original version of the Lone Peak challenged the traditional ‘locked-in’ design concept, which asserted that locked-in feet made a runner more nimble. Instead, Altra decided to design a shoe that allows the forefoot to move—without sacrificing your ability to run on any trails. Additionally, the balanced cushioning promotes foot health for runners with good form. In challenging the status quo, the Lone Peak offers a unique type of shoe for runners who prefer a different running experience, and it’s a must-have in any trail running shoe store.

WHAT’S NEW:

The MaxTrak outsole compound in the Lone Peak 7’s is stickier and more durable than recent Lone Peak models. The MaxTrak’s lugs are significantly improved and will really help you dig in to unstable snow or mud. The midsole is still made of Altra EGO foam and TPU rock guard, though it is slightly slimmer. This change was made partly because the upper is also slimmer due to seamless construction. This helps improves the fit and reduces stitch irritation; it’s simple improvement to an already-great design—something that will delight Lone Peak fans.

WHO THESE SHOES ARE FOR:

  • Trail runners needing shoes that can do it all

  • Hikers of all abilities

  • Any runner that experiences variable or sloppy terrain for all seasons

MATERIALS AND DESIGN:

  • Balanced Cushioning – Cushioning with zero drop from heel to toe to promote natural stride, reducing impact

  • Original FootShape Fit – Shape of the shoe adds comfort by giving your feet room to move

  • TPU Rock Guard – Protects from bruising from rocks and roots and dispersing impact to help you stay on your feet on uneven terrain

  • MaxTrac outsole – sticky, durable, aggressive outsole for grip on any surface

  • TrailClaw lugs – Strategically placed grip under your toes for more traction

  • NEW Improved upper – Seamless upper to eliminate irritation and improve fit

HOW THEY FIT:

  • SIZE: true to size

  • HEEL: locked in (for shoes that accommodate so many foot types, the heel does a good job of avoiding slipping. For narrow feet, using the last in lacing eyelet is recommended)

  • MIDFOOT: Moderate to Wide (Standard size accommodates most feet, some with narrow feet might find the midfoot a bit too wide)

  • FOREFOOT: Wide (Plenty of room for your toes to roam)

HOW THEY COMPARE TO OTHER SHOES:

  • CUSHION: Altra Lone Peak 7 has good cushion for most distances and the flexible stone guard adds more protection. If you would like more cushion, we suggest Altra Olympus 7. For less cushion, Altra’s most nimble trail shoes are Altra Superior 5.

  • PRONATION: Altra Lone Peak 7 provides decent stability with a wide platform. For more stability (though not in true pronation control shoes) try Altra Olympus 5.

  • SPEED: Altra Lone Peak 7 is often seen at trail races and can definitely get you to the finish line. For those looking to be more competitive Altra’s top of the line racer is the Mont Blanc Boa.

  • GRIP: Altra Lone Peak 7 has grip to take on just about anything on the trail. For a road equivalent we suggest Altra Torin 6.

  • OTHER BRANDS: Shoes from other brands similar to Altra Lone Peak 7 are Hoka Speek Goat 5 or Saucony Peregrine 13.
